SAMBAWAN ISLAND PARADISE
IN BILIRAN
Sambawan Island is Biliran’s answer to paradise. White sands, thriving marine life and warm blue waters lapping up the tree-lined shore is a must for those wanting escape from reality. Maria Benita, our good fairy must have worked wonders in this place.
Sambawan Island is located 5km of the west coast of Maripipi Municipality, south of the Samar sea, is fast becoming the most visited attraction by the tourists. The semi- curved beach with soaring rock formations covered with green grass as a backdrop create a bubble of fantasy that you are entering another dimension. Source
The island is pretty small, so there isn’t much in terms of activities. But if you’re looking for a low-key island that is mainly enjoyed by Filipinos, it’s perfect. The interior of the island boasts rocky hills, great for going wandering. On top of the largest hill there’s a lookout with beautiful views of the different shades of blue in the water below.
After your hike down the hill, take a dip in the cool ocean. The water is relatively shallow and calm along the shore. Unfortunately the sand isn’t the soft powder you might imagine, but a rough mix of tiny shells. The silver lining is that you won’t have to fight anybody off for an area of your own. We recommend bringing a pair of flip flops or shoes if you’re going to be doing any beach volleyball or running along the sand. You can rent snorkels for 200 pesos for 3 hours. There are a collection of colorful fish in the area, especially near the rocks. Source
But to see the most breathtaking beach site in Biliran, one has to exert a little effort in terms of transportation.
A semi-private resort can be found in Sambawan Island, offering basic accommodation at a slightly steep rate of ₱2,500 per night, although open-air cottages are also for rent at a cheaper price of ₱500 per day. For day trips, an entrance fee of ₱75/person is collected.
When in the island, don’t miss climbing the concrete stairs that lead to a viewing deck. It’s here where you’ll have a magnificent view of Sambawan’s fine white sand beach, the clear azure sea, and the imposing cone-shaped Maripipi Volcano in the distance. Source
