SAMBAWAN ISLAND PARADISE
IN BILIRAN

We sailed for 30 minutes, then finally set foot on the beautiful island.  Sambawan is an elongated island (but it also looks like a group of tiny islets) with white coral beaches and clear, turquoise waters.  The ocean waves here are playfully strong.  A few cottages with rooms are being built and ready in a few months to accommodate overnight visitors, although up until now overnight stays are allowed using tents.

Aside from swimming in the clear blue waters, you can also go hiking in Sambawan.  The island features a hill with a watchtower on top.  Currently, steps are being carved along one side of the hill to make the climb easier for hikers.  While climbing takes a lot of effort, you will still be rewarded by the spectacular sight of the island and its surrounding sea with its wonder, which is set against the mainland Maripipi as background.   Source

How to Get There

Coming from Tacloban City, ride a van or bus heading to Naval from Tacloban Central Terminal or any of the van terminals (Duptours or Van-Van’s) located in downtown Tacloban. Travel time from Tacloban to Naval takes about 2.5hrs and costs Php140.

From any point in Naval town center, hire a pedicab to bring you to the Port of Naval. There are two passenger boats that leave the Port of Naval for Maripipi at 10:00am everyday except Sundays. Choose the “Brian Claire” boat as it docks in Maripipi town proper. “Viga Express”, the other boat, docks in Brgy. Binalayan which is about 15mins motorcycle ride from Maripipi town proper. Brian Claire goes back to Naval at 4:30am of the following day.

Once in Maripipi town proper, hire a habal-habal to bring you to Brgy. Ol-og (should cost less than Php50 if you’re alone, approximately 20mins from Maripipi town proper) but be sure to contact Mr. JC Manuel at 09264104866 beforehand. He manages Sambawan Beach Resort, the only resort in Sambawan. Boat rental costs Php300 for a boat that can accommodate up to 5 persons. Travel time from Brgy. Ol-og to Sambawan is only about 15mins.  Source
