Timothy Richard “Tim” Tebow, born August 14, 1987 is an American football player who is currently the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL).

 

Tebow was selected in the 1st round of the 2010 NFL draft by the Denver Broncos. He started the last three games of his rookie season and became the Broncos’ full-time starting QB beginning in the 6th game of 2011. The team was 1-4 before Tebow began playing regularly, but immediately began winning with him on the field, often by coming from behind late in the 4th quarter, until they won the AFC West title.

Tebow was born in Makati City in the Philippines, to American parents who were serving as Baptist missionaries at the time. His mother, Pamela Elaine (née Pemberton), is the daughter of a U.S. Army colonel, and his father, Robert Ramsey Tebow II, is a pastor.  While pregnant, his mother suffered a life-threatening infection with a pathogenic amoeba. Because of the drugs used to rouse her from a coma and to treat her dysentery, the fetus experienced a severe placental abruption. Doctors had expected a stillbirth and recommended an abortion to protect her life,although abortions are illegal in the Philippines, but she decided not to have one.

 

Tebow is the youngest of five children, with sisters Christy and Katie, and brothers Robby and Peter. All of the Tebow children were homeschooled by their mother, who worked to instill the family’s Christian beliefs along the way. In 1996, legislation was passed in Florida allowing homeschooled students to compete in local high school sporting events. The law specifies that homeschooled students may participate on the team of the local school in the school district in which they live.The Tebows lived in Jacksonville, Florida, and he played linebacker and tight end at the local Trinity Christian Academy for one season. Tebow’s preferred position was quarterback, but Trinity football team’s offense did not rely on passing the football, so he began to explore his options to play for a new high school. He decided to attend Nease High School, which under head coach Craig Howard was known for having a passing offense. With the rest of his family living on a farm in Duval County, Tim and his mother moved into an apartment in nearby St. Johns County, making him eligible to play for the football team at Nease. His performance soon turned heads and led to a minor controversy regarding the fact that he was a home-schooled student having his choice of school to play for.

Tebow was considered one of the nation’s top recruits and was the subject of an ESPN “Faces in Sports” documentary. The segment was titled “Tim Tebow: The Chosen One”, and focused on Tim’s homeschool controversy and missionary work in the Philippines, as well as his exploits on the field of play and the college recruiting process. Tim Tebow was also featured in Sports Illustrated on the “Faces in the Crowd” page. In 2007 he was named to FHSAA’s All-Century Team that listed the Top 33 football players in the state of Florida’s 100 year history of high school football.

Tebow spent the three summers prior to enrolling at the University of Florida in the Philippines, assisting with his father’s orphanage and missionary work.

He is left handed.

In 2010, a new rule for the next NCAA football season, dubbed “The Tebow Rule” by media because it would have affected him, banned messages on eye paint. During his college football career, Tebow frequently wore references to biblical verses on his eye black. In the 2009 BCS Championship Game, he wore John 3:16 on his eye black; the verse was the highest-ranked Google search term over the next 24 hours, generating over 90 million searches. Additionally, later, when Tebow switched to another verse, there were 3.43 million searches of “Tim Tebow” and “Proverbs 3:5-6” together.  Tebow stated of the searches “It just goes to show you the influence and the platform that you have as a student-athlete and as a quarterback at Florida”.

 

The NFL already has a rule like this in prohibiting players from wearing messages on eye black; so, Tebow would not be able to continue the practice in the NFL. Despite the media labeling it as the Tebow rule, the NCAA denies the rule was influenced by Tebow particularly, since many other notable players (Reggie Bush and Terrelle Pryor for example) wear or have worn messages on eye black. An NCAA spokesman said “When this rule was proposed the committee did not focus on any one team or student athlete. That measure reinforces what the intended use of eye black is, which is to shade the eyes from the sun.”

 

 

The foundation started by Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow will help finance construction of a children’s hospital in the Philippines.

Donors to the Tim Tebow Foundation and CURE International, which announced a partnership in October, will share the $3 million cost. This is the first joint project for the two organizations.

 

Tebow was born in Makati City in the Philippines, but grew up in Jacksonville, Fla., where the foundation he started in January 2010 is based.

The 30-bed hospital will be built in Davao City on the island of Mindanao, and about a third of its patients are expected to be charity cases, the two organizations said.

 

The groundbreaking for the Tebow CURE Hospital will be in January, with an opening expected in mid-2013. The hospital will focus on orthopedics.

 

“I was born in the Philippines and my parents have been missionaries to that area since 1985,” Tebow said in a statement. “The Philippines have always had a special place in my heart. I’m excited to be a part of this hospital that will bring healing to thousands of children who would not otherwise have access to care.”

Whether you like Denver Broncos QB Tim Tebow(notes) as a football player or not, you can’t deny that he and his foundation are doing a lot to help children all over the world. His newest venture teams the Tim Tebow Foundation with CURE International in the construction of a children’s hospital in the Philippines.

 

 

Why the Philippines?

 Before Tebow became the football giant that he is, he first had to move to the United States. Tim Tebow was born in Makati City in 1987 while his parents were Baptist missionaries. For this reason, the Philippines are very close to Tebow and he knows that many of the children in the poorest areas are unable to access medical care that they need.

Type of Hospital

 The hospital is set to be built in Davao City and they hope to break ground in January 2012 with construction being completed in mid-2013. It is estimated to cost around $3 million and costs will be shared by both the Tim Tebow Foundation and Cure International. It will be a 30-bed surgical facility that will focus on treating conditions such as club foot and bow legs. While these are simple surgeries, the families in this area do not have access to this type of care. They hope to be able to treat at least a third of the patients free of charge. In addition to providing medical care, they hope to provide the message of faith, hope and love while spreading and teaching Christ’s Gospel.

 

 

 

Other Projects in the Philippines

 This hospital will not be the first operation the Tim Tebow Foundation supports in the Philippines. Uncle Dick’s Home, an orphanage founded by the Bob Tebow Evangelistic Association also receives support. This orphanage is located in Lamsugod, Surallah, South Cotabato, Mindanao, Philippines and is currently the home to 49 orphans, according to the Tim Tebow Foundation.

 

The Real Tebow

 

 While the critics may call Tebow a joke when it comes to his play as an NFL QB, his devotion to his religion and helping those in need is something to be admired. He brings this belief, strength and determination into everything he does, including on the field. His teammates and coach agree that he is the real deal.

 

Coach John Fox said, “He’s real. He walks the walk. A guy like that in today’s society, in my mind, ought to be celebrated, not scrutinized to the level that he is.” Teammate Eddie Royal(notes) says, “He really is genuine and the emotion and the passion that you see him out there playing with, he has the same passion off the field with those type of things, the charity things and the missionary things.”

 

Tebow is making a difference so far this season with the Denver Broncos both in the way he plays and the fact that there are now wins on the board. However, I think the biggest difference Tebow will make in the long run will be off the field and in the lives of many.
