HALO-HALO DESSERT
Halo-halo is a popular Filipino dessert that is a mixture of shaved ice and evaporated milk to which are added various boiled sweet beans and fruits, and served in a tall glass or wide-mouthed bowl. You have a choice of some or all the ingredients.
Ingredients include boiled kidney beans, garbanzos, sugar palm fruit, coconut sport, and plantains caramelized in sugar, jackfruit, gulaman, tapioca, nata de coco, sweet potato, pounded crushed young rice . In terms of arrangement, most of the ingredients (fruits, beans, and other sweets) are first placed inside the glass or bowl, followed by the shaved ice. This is then sprinkled with sugar, and topped with either (or a combination of) custard, purple yam, or ice cream. Evaporated milk is poured into the mixture upon serving. The halo-halo basically is sweet, creamy, and a filling dessert.

This Filipino concoction is quite popular during the hot summer months (March-June) in the country, just as ice cream is. It is usually served in tall, clear glasses or wide-mouthed bowls that show its colorful contents that tempt one’s taste buds.

Halo-(from “halo” = mix) is a representative of the various sweets Filipinos enjoy. Legumes, rootcrops and fruits are cooked in syrup until tender and sweet. Eggyolks and milk are made into leche flan. Ube is grated for haleya.Fresh ripe fruits are cubed, pinipig is toasted, buko is grated and if one has time – sorbets or ice cream can even be made. All these are put in a tall glass that is then filled with shaved ice. It is served with a long teaspoon and continually mixed as you eat.
